Asthma Q & A

What is Asthma?

Asthma is a chronic condition that causes inflammation in the lungs along with hyper-responsiveness in the airways when the sufferer is exposed to a trigger. Asthma is a common problem, affecting almost 300 million people around the world today. It is more common in children, affecting 12 percent of the worldwide population as opposed to the 8 percent of adults who suffer from asthma. Asthma has grown increasingly common over the last several decades, with its prevalence doubling every 14 years since the 1950s.

What Happens During an Asthma Attack?

During an asthma attack, the airways start to swell, becoming so narrow that it's difficult to breathe. A person who is suffering from an asthma attack may feel like a fish out of water, gasping for air. People who suffer from asthma may have chest pain or a light-headed feeling during asthma attacks, as well.

What Are the Triggers of Asthma Attacks?

This can vary from one person to another. Some common asthma triggers can include changes in the barometric pressure, stress, smoke, pet dander, house dust, pollen, and many other things.

What is the Treatment for Asthma?

Treatment for asthma depends on the type of asthma and on the specific patient. Some people have asthma attacks only at very specific times, for example during exercise sessions or during the winter months. It's important for patients to work with Dr. Farnam to identify asthma patterns as much as possible, as it can allow him to create the best treatment plan. Many patients need to have a rescue inhaler for asthma attacks, and some patients need to take asthma medication on a daily basis as well. Conditions that can worsen asthma, for example obesity, allergic rhinitis, and sinusitis, should be controlled effectively as part of the overall asthma treatment plan for best results.
