What is Oral Immunotherapy?
Oral Immunotherapy is a treatment option for patients with food allergies with the goal of preventing accidental allergic reactions to foods. OIT uses a protocol called desensitization in which a small amount of the allergenic food is introduced at very low doses and increased slowly so the patient can eventually eat the food they are allergic to. OIT provides an option to turn allergenic foods that were once life-threatening into daily foods that are now tolerable.
Is OIT a cure?
No, OIT is not a cure. The food must be consumed daily to maintain tolerance to the food.
How long does OIT take?
It can take almost 6 months for the patient to reach their optimal daily dose of food allergen which they consume on a regular basis.
Which food can you perform OIT for?
We offer OIT for:
- Tree nuts (almond, cashew, hazelnut, pecan, walnut, pistachio, macadamia nut)
- Cow’s milk
- Sesame seed
- Sunflower seed
Can patients with hay fever, eczema, or asthma be treated with OIT?
Yes, but it is essential these conditions are under excellent control prior to starting OIT. Dr. Farnam is a board-certified allergist and can develop a personalized treatment plan to better control these conditions prior to starting OIT.
